Jewish Eyes on the Arts Salon – April 21, May 19, NYC

An informal Salon evening where artists can share their work in a friendly atmosphere and receive feedback.

Friends are extremely welcome, and anyone who is interested in coming as a participant or to be in the audience can join us. In addition, if you are not yourself an artist, but know of a piece of art which you would like to present through the prism of your Jewish identity, we welcome this as well.

We are looking for artists who can articulate a connection to their Jewish identity and explain how artwork connects to these themes. Jewish themes are as varied as the people who identify as Jews, so this could be as specific as connecting to a Jewish source, or as broad as feeling part of a community, or living your lives by values you associate with your Judaism.

Here are some ideas for possible ways to link Judaism and artwork:

Identity – How my Judaism interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Social Justice – How my Jewish values interact with/ conflict with/ inform / inspire / my views on society and how this relates to artwork.

Family – How my Jewish family interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Community – Being a part of a community within a city or country (such as being a “New York” Jew or an Israeli or a Russian Jew) and how this interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Spirituality – My (positive? negative? other?) relationship with God and how this interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Practice – Things I do as a Jew (Because that’s how I grew up? because I feel obligated? because I find them meaningful? quirky habits?) and how this interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Special Moments – Moments where I felt close to/ far from God/ my Judaism/ my Jewish family/community/identity and how this interacts with/ conflicts with/ informs/ inspires / my identity and the artwork.

Cultural References – Where Judaism plays into a greater cultural context, or how you can find your own Jewish identity or values reflected in a piece of art or pop culture.

Anything else you think is relevant! We welcome more ideas and please share them so we can add them to the list.

Dates and Deadlines

Please submit your piece by email to Timna following the procedure below by NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, April 14. This is to ensure that we can provide the best platform for presenting the piece in the Salon.

Eligibility

Open to artists and non-artists who submit artwork in any medium that relates to a Jewish theme as indicated above.

Equipment

Musicians – please bring your own instruments. If provisions need to be made to transport them, please indicate this when you submit the piece. While we will try to accommodate you, we do have limited resources, so we will have to discuss how best to support you.

Audio Visual Equipment – We have a laptop available for video pieces. If you own a projector, or know how to get one, we would be most grateful for your help! Write to us at [email protected]

Submissions

Artists may submit pieces by email to [email protected]

Subject line: Salon (please indicate date – April 21 or May 19 or both)

Information: Name of Artist, Name of Artwork, dimensions (for visual art and equipment)

Link: Please include a youtube link (for video, music, movement, theater, etc) or jpg of the piece you will be presenting. If the piece has not been recorded, please provide a brief written description (no longer than 150 words)

Statement: A short blurb (150-300 words) about the piece and its connection to Judaism. These will be featured on our website, along the artwork you submit. By submitting work to be considered for the Salon, artists grant Jewish Eyes on The Arts the right to use their artwork for the purpose of marketing. Artwork may appear on the website, and on social network sites.
