Barbara Freedman’s art exhibit “New commentaries on old texts” consists of images based on old texts, done in a Beit Midrash at the Skirball center led by Tobi Kahn. Reception August 21 from 4-6 PM; the show will be up thru labor day. More info here. Freedman has been attending Skirball’s Artists Beit Midrash since its conception.

Storefront for Art and Architecture will present Sacred Spaces in Profane Buildings a New York Archive, a project by Matilde Cassani opening on September 13th. The project unveils the hidden spaces within New York dedicated to the different beliefs of its citizens.

As part of an upcoming exhibition, we are developing a New York Archive of Sacred Spaces in Profane Buildings and we need your help. This is an open call for contributions that explain either a story or the memory of a visit, a sketch of a known space, a photograph of a street sign, a location in a map, anything that might help us construct the most comprehensive guide to the sacred unknown of New York.

Do you know of a secret-sacred building in your neighborhood? (ie. Shteibel, Independant Minyan, etc)
Do you know of a shop that has become a Mosque?
Or an apartment that has become an Iglesia Evangelica?
Is there a prayer space in your block?

We are looking for profane buildings transformed into the sacred: private shrines; new bespoke religious buildings; and unofficial spaces for prayer. A selection of the submissions will be exhibited at Storefront and will be part of the Sacred Spaces in Profane Buildings NY Archive. This is a collective project and we want you to be part of it.

To participate submit your material at:

Stephen Wise Temple is celebrating Sukkot with a “wine and cheese” Art Reception, Sunday, October 16, from 2-5 pm. Framed artworks as well as 3D pieces will be curated into the festival. (Curators will determine appropriate material) Artists will be given one or two 4′ wide by 6′ tall panels. (One or both sides, depending on how they fill up!) Work may not exceed the size of the panels, but you may fill the panels with smaller works. So you could put up at least two framed pieces per panel. (special consideration may be given to using two panels for a 5′ tall and 7-8′ wide piece, to be determined!) Some tables with cloth covers will also be set up for exhibition space. (special installations will be considered)

The event will promote Jewish artists and their art to its temple members.

The event will take place outdoors at Stephen S. Wise Temple, with a wine and cheese reception, and jazz music. Temple is located located on Casiano in Los Angeles near Mulholland and the 405 freeway

co-curators Susan Gesundheit and Debra Sokolow

Please contact Susan Gesundheit with any questions, a prospectus with exact details is being drawn up, and will be sent to you upon your inquiry!

Jewish artists explore the visual texture of their communities

Hosted by the Aleph Society’s Global Day of Jewish Learning, the Jewish Art Salon and Jewish Art Now.

ABOUT THE GLOBAL DAY OF JEWISH LEARNING
The 2011 Global Day of Jewish Learning will focus on the unity of the Jewish people through the words of the Shema Yisrael, the quintessential Jewish prayer. Last year’s inaugural Global Day of Jewish Learning celebrated the completion of the Steinsaltz Talmud and counted over 400 communities in 48 countries and six continents. On Nov 13th, 2011, the second annual Global Day of Jewish Learning will unite Jewish communities through the study of sacred text.

ABOUT “GLOBAL/LOCAL”
Building upon the success of the 2010 Global Day, we are excited to announce a new partnership between the Global Day of Jewish Learning, the Jewish Art Salon and Jewish Art Now. “Global/Local” will be a virtual online gallery, accessible to all Global Day Communities. The featured work will reflect the diversity of the participating communities.

PROSPECTUS
We invite submissions that explore the visual texture and vocabulary particular to your Jewish community. Themes of isolation, integration, social and ethnic exchange and modification within communities are example of appropriate subject matter.

Please pay close attention to the digital formatting specifications and make sure the images you send present your work to its best effect.

Selection Notification: October 10th, 2011

The Jewish Community Foundation of Kansas City is reviving its Jewish Art Fund to develop arts in the Jewish community, as well as promote Jewish art in the general community. Michael Klein is leading this initiative.

“The fund’s original purpose was two-fold: to purchase Judaic items for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and to bring an exhibit from the Jewish Museum in New York to Kansas City.”

Read more about the fund in this article by the Jewish Chronicle of Kansas City or contact Beatrice Fine at (913) 327-4618.
